Commenting on the hill fire in Solva, local Assembly Member JOYCE WATSON AM (Mid and West Wales) said:
“Our fire fighters are still fighting to bring this fire under control. Our emergency services from across the region, including Carmarthen, worked together last night and are risking themselves to protect us.
“This week the world saw their bravery at the Chevron explosion, and I must praise them for their courage and dedication.
“Local residents have also worked hard to avert disaster, and so far people have not had to be evacuated from their homes.
“However, as the wind picks up it is hard to stop these sort of fires reigniting.
“I hope that this fire was not started deliberately, as we can all see the risk and disruption this has caused, and I will be following this closely to see if the investigation does confirm this.
“Unfortunately, at this time of year, we often see an increase in fires which have been deliberately started, and I hope those who have done this in the past now think again.
“With the recent hot weather, we must all follow the countryside code and be vigilant to the risk of gorse fires when enjoying our landscape.
“Gorse fires not only risk both human and animal lives and cause huge damage, cost and inconvenience, but they also divert our emergency services from other incidents.”
