Senedd Member Joyce Watson visited Ysgol y Bedol last week (6 March) to see how staff are supporting children with autism.
The Garnant school’s dedicated autism teaching facility, Canolfan y Bedol, opened last year. It provides specialist support to eight pupils, with plans to expand the service this September.
The Labour member for Mid and West Wales was accompanied by school governor Cllr Kevin Madge. Speaking afterwards, Mrs Watson said:
“I’m very grateful to Mr Richards and Kevin Madge for arranging the visit. The school’s fantastic staff are doing some fantastic stuff, providing tailored support to children with additional learning needs, developmental delays and communication difficulties. There is also lovely outdoor space, with a garden and polytunnel where pupils learn how to grow their own food and even look after chickens!
“It’s a real community school, working closely with local organisations and the voluntary sector – from the food bank and community library to after school and holiday clubs. Everyone connected with Ysgol y Bedol should be very proud.”
Ysgol y Bedol was established in 2005, funded by the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools project.
