LABOUR Mid and West AM Joyce Watson has joined parliamentarians from around the world to call for an international treaty to ban nuclear weapons.
The campaign, which has been organised by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), has so far gained the support of more than 800 politicians from 42 different countries.
Mrs Watson said:
“My generation grew up with a palpable dread of nuclear conflict. The only way to guarantee they will never be used is to outlaw and eliminate them. I can think of no better inheritance we can pass to future generations.”
In his letter to Mrs Watson, Brian Jones, Vice Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) Cymru, explained:
“Nuclear weapons are the only weapons of mass destruction not yet prohibited by an international convention, even though they have the greatest destructive capacity of all weapons.
“A global ban on nuclear weapons is a humanitarian imperative of the highest order. It is necessary, feasible and increasingly urgent.”
The call for such a treaty is endorsed by more than 150 governments, the United National General-Secretary, and the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.
Joyce Watson is a member of the National Assembly for Wales’ environment committee.
