‘Make do and mend’ – Joyce visits successful Pembrokeshire ‘upcycling’ charity, FRAME
Joyce Watson AM marked Social Enterprise Week (17 – 21 November) with a visit to a successful Pembrokeshire ‘upcycling’ business.
FRAME gives a new lease of life to household furniture and clothing, and offers low-cost items to people in need.
The ‘re-use’ charity has three stores: in Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock and Goodwick. Mrs Watson visited the Haverfordwest outlet, The Old Western Telegraph Building, on Friday (21 November) to see for herself how FRAME is challenging our “throw away culture”. The Mid and West AM also learnt how the charity provides supported job opportunities for people with disabilities, learning difficulties and those who are in any way socially disadvantaged.
Mrs Watson, who is a member of the Welsh Assembly’s enterprise and business committee, said:
“FRAME does fantastic work – with its environmentally-friendly ethos, the charity supports its workers and provides discounted goods to people who are struggling to make ends meet.”
The Mid and West Wales AM was given a shop-floor tour by Jenny Sims, FRAME’s founder and chief executive, and Serena Allen of the Wales Co-operative Centre.
Joyce Watson continued:
“I am very grateful to Jenny and Serena for inviting me to see first-hand how FRAME is doing good by re-using goods. Social Enterprise Week is a great way to recognise and celebrate the growing role that social enterprises like FRAME play in our economy.”
The Pembrokeshire charity asks for donations on all household items it received for re-use. Profits go towards day-to-day running costs and training and supporting its workforce.
FRAME purchased the Merlins Bridge site in 2011 with help from a £295,000 grant from the Welsh Government.
