Local Assembly Member Joyce Watson AM recently visited Ysgol Maesydderwen, Ystradgynlais, to view the progress being made on the refurbishment of the school.
She was joined by Cllr Sue Mc Nicholas, Vice Chair of School Governors, Hugh Pattrick, Chair of School Governors, and Head Teacher Mrs Sally Speedy as they toured the work at Ysgol Maesydderwen.
Joyce Watson AM said:
“Maesydderwyn School has been at the heart of the local community for generations. It was good to see all the work the staff and governors are doing to keep the pupils’ education running smoothly, also to witness the difference that Assembly investment is making to the school. Some of the children are currently being taught out of portacabins, but I hope they and their parents will feel this inconvenience is worth the wait when the refurbishment work is completed next year.
“There is still a huge amount of work to be done, but our children deserve a fit for purpose school to study and grow up in, and I am delighted that this work is progressing well.”
This is part of £37m of joint investment from Welsh Government and Powys County council to refurbish the High School and to build four new primary schools in the area – three English primaries and one Welsh.
Cllr Sue Mc Nicholas said: “My grandmother went to this school and we’ve been campaigning for a better environment for our children to learn in for many years now. It’s always encouraging when Assembly Members take the time to visit our area, and I look forward to inviting Joyce to the opening of the school next September.”
